What Happened Next?
The disillusioned look of the subject of the portrait, the shadow of a person edging in on the bottom right of the image, it all creates an uncertain narrative that I find unnerving. Normally photos like this are happy events, the subject smiles at the camera, but this candid portrait leaves you wondering what the lady is unhappy about, and more importantly, what happened next…
In picture #5, the “blank” look can be attributed to the fact that she was dead. This is the Victorian era genre of last pictures taken with their loved ones. If you look down at her feet, you will see the contraption that was used to “prop” up the bodies. Google it.
