Cabinet Memorial Photograph
At first glance, this is another portrait from the long lost past, maybe from the 1900s or there about. Nothing unusual there, until you learn that the turning page around the man symbolises that he has passed. This is a memorial card, produced after the death of the man featured, as a memento for his loved ones. In some cases the memorial card would feature a post-mortem picture of the person, before photography was commonplace the family would have no record of their departed loved ones without taking a post-mortem image. This is an example of a . I’m not sure if this ones a post-mortem memorial photo, but there’s a lack of sparkle in the eyes that hints it could be, and a gentle reminder of what awaits us all.
In picture #5, the “blank” look can be attributed to the fact that she was dead. This is the Victorian era genre of last pictures taken with their loved ones. If you look down at her feet, you will see the contraption that was used to “prop” up the bodies. Google it.
